Rear main seal cover / end plate / carrier removal - MX-5 Miata Forum

OK, I did it. I took the 4 bolts out, carefully worked a putty knife down the back side of the plate to separate the sealant (careful not to go so far in as to make contact with the crank shaft) and then took my utility knife to the sealant around the curved part between the oil pan and the plate. Gently pried the plate towards the back of the car (thanks to that diagram, I was able to see the two sleeves that prevent upward movement of the plate). The thing popped right off. No oil pan bolts were touched in the process.

I'll have to get a new oil pan gasket, but if you look at a picture of the oil pan gaskets, they are just little curved pieces that perfectly fit the space between the plate and the pan. The oil pan gasket is not a full circumference pan gasket like many traditional American engines use. In other words, you can replace the front and rear "oil pan gaskets" without actually removing the oil pan. Strange, but true.
