image courtesy of http://carlotbot.com/The license plate lights on your Chevy Suburban (or for any car in this matter) are an important part of the safety package that is designed for your truck. The rear combination lights, brake lights, position lamps and signal lamps all work in conjunction to provide maximum safety especilly during night time driving. The license plate lights serve two purposes, namely: to illuminate the license plate lights for better visibility and to serve as position lights that also add a visual appeal to the back of the vehicle. The latest technology involves using LED bulbs for your headlights, tail lights and license plate lights and are brighter and last longer than conventional bulbs.

It is easy to learn how to change the license plate lights on a Chevy Suburban, although the location of the license plates will depend on the make and model of your truck. It is safe to assume that the process is altogether similar to changing the license plate lights on any car sold on the market. The location of the license plate holder and the light assembly may differ but the process remains virtually the same.

Depending on the make and model of your Suburban, the license plate lights may be located on the center of the rear door or on the rear bumper. Regardless of the case, you only need a philips screwdriver and the appropriate sized bulbs for your Chevy. You may opt to use LED license plate lights for better illumination of the license plates. You may also choose from different colors to create a unique, aftermarket look. As with all modifications pertaining to the lights on your car or truck, it would be best to read the owners manual to determine the right size and voltage of the bulb. Remember to only use bulbs that are specified under the various driving laws in your area.

Step 2 – Remove the Screws and the Bulbs

Use a philips or flathead screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws that hold the light assembly in place. Pull the light until the bulb and socket assembly slide out of the mounting plate. A simple twist and pull action will remove the bulb from the socket. Twist the bulb in a counterclockwise direction to remove. Set the old bulb aside. If you happen to own a 2005 Suburban or other models that have the license plate on the rear bumper, you only need to reach behind the bumper to gain access to the light assembly. Twist the socket in a 1/4 inch turn to loosen. Pull the socket and remove the old bulb. You need not remove the lens assembly.

Grab the new bulb and insert into the socket. Use a dry cotton rag to wipe the bulbs clean before placing it in the socket. Moisture and oil from sweaty palms and fingerprints might harm the integrity of your new bulbs. Turn the bulb clockwise to securely lock in place.

Step 4 – Insert Bulb and Socket in Mounting Area

Insert the bulb and socket assembly into the mounting area. Re-insert the screws and tighten by turning in a clockwise direction using a screwdriver. Do not overtighten the screws to prevent damage to the thread and the light assembly.
